BRINK'S-MAT theft ringleader Micky McAvoy killed himself by overdosing on sleeping drugs after his spouse's dying, a coroner has dominated.
The 71-year-old was found lifeless on New Year's Day final yr, six months after his wife Kathleen died from a heart assault.
An inquest heard he had been laid low with grief, shunned cancer remedy and threatened to take his own life.
McAvoy was considered one of six men who stole gold bullion worth £26million from the Brink's-Mat cargo warehouse at Heathrow in 1983.
He obtained 25 years' jail — and was ripped off for his share.
The record-breaking robbery and its violent aftermath later featured within the highly-acclaimed BBC1 drama The Gold.
Coroner Jonathan Landau heard gave a story verdict at South London coroner's courtroom and stated it appeared McAvoy had meant to take his personal life in his flat in Bromley.
Close household pal Stephen Brown found McAvoy's body at his flat in Bromley, South London, on New Yr's Day.
He stated "everyday was a wrestle" for McAvoy.
Mr Brown added: "He would often make comments about his life, suggesting he did not need to be alive any longer and needed to be together with his spouse."
McAvoy's daughter Keeley Gainey stated: "It has been probably the most devastating loss for us all. We'll by no means come to phrases with the lack of my father.
"We really consider this was an accident. He would never have achieved this to himself or his family intentionally."
